Personally as a non-serviceman (the ATC doesn't count) I think that the service done for their country by folk should be recognised. Agreed that there needs to be a cut off point where you don't qualify for it based on a minimum amount of years served, but apart from that I don't have a problem with it.

NZ Defence Service Medal - Application forms now available The online application NZDSM form is now live on the NZDF Medals website - go to: medals.nzdf.mil.nz/ and follow the links, or go directly to medals.nzdf.mil.nz/nzdsm/index.html The website provides clear instructions on the priority being given to those living ex-Service persons aged 70 or over and terminally ill ex-Service persons (also see medals.nzdf.mil.nz/nzdsm/faqs.html ). Applications are now open for both written applications downloaded from the site ( medals.nzdf.mil.nz/info/forms.html ) or 'online' as applicants wish. For those RSAs and Branches without email access the NZDSM Application forms are attached. All applications will be dealt with in the following priority order: a) The over-riding priority will be for any terminally ill ex-Service persons. b) All applications from ex-Service persons aged 70 or over will be processed in order of date of receipt by the NZDSM Project Team at Trentham Military Camp. c) Applications from ex-Service persons aged 69 or younger and from the next-of-kin of deceased ex-Service persons will be called for progressively by NZDF over the next year or so. We will advise through the website as and when we receive regular updates from the NZDF Medals office. Please note that in the case of all CMT, all National Service and those Territorial Forces (Navy, Army and Air) applicants who do not have a long service award for Territorial service, online applications will be accepted but need to be followed up on paper with a Statutory Declaration of Service witnessed by a JP or equivalent. This is because some CMT, National Service and Territorial Forces records are either missing or incomplete. Completing and submitting the Statutory Declaration of Service will ensure that there are no delays in processing due to the requirement for the NZDSM Project Team to write back asking for more information. All living ex-Regular personnel can apply online and should not need to complete any Statutory Declaration as those files are in good order. If you go to the NZDF Medals website, you can easily follow the links to the application form and complete it. If you can not access the online form, or you require assistance to complete the form, your local RSA will have copies and can help you with filling it in. One of the key instructions for all applicants is that it does NOT MATTER if you do not have all details filled in. The more info the better so please fill in all you can. If there is not enough to identify your file and service details NZDF will contact you for more information.

Has anyone got one of these things yet? It is interesting to note that the regulations for this medal acknowledge the fact that the NZDF practised discriminatory policies in the past. My wife for instance was forced to leave the RNZAF after 2 years service when we got married in 1969. According to the short service clause personnel forced to leave the service prior to serving the required 3 years will be entitled to the NZDSM.

The UK medals are like that there are always ifs, buts and maybes about getting medals so they can cut down on the numbers who get them....Good luck to the veterans who apply.

I've just been on the website and it looked fairly easy, so went ahead and ordered it. I'm (only) 45 so may be waiting a while but at least its in the system now.

The UK version? The Veterans Badge is a lapel badge for UK Armed Forces Veterans who enlisted in HM Armed Forces between 3 September 1945 and 31 December 1994. There is no qualifying length of Service. The badge is issued by the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency. More details can be found on their website. There is no official medal called the 'Veterans Medal'.

I've just been on the website and it looked fairly easy, so went ahead and ordered it. I'm (only) 45 so may be waiting a while but at least its in the system now. Pretty easy... I reckon. I struggled with my discharge date but I did see approximate dates are fine anyway. In the end I went and found my leaving certificate and I was only 2 days out with my guestimate. I have been waiting for my age group to be announced, I am just a youngster like Dave.... I am thinking a few here would have had their applications in last year ... when the over 60's was announced. I was a little surprised to see the announcement was dated 11th Jan, - I missed it completely back then. I am sure many of the guys in that age grouping will be unaware that it is their turn to get in. Somehow I think many are like you Jonesy, still in the 40's. You may be in for a surprise and get your gongs quicker than you expected. It could be a slow month for applications anyway. I was a late starter joining up.... when asked my reasons why I told them that I had worked out that civilians did not qualify for the VC. Became a bit of a joke for the next few months but I waited a few years then left... still empty handed. Something to do with not having so many wars back then. The Yanks were still smarting over Vietnam and went into hiding for a period.. Still the Poms managed to get a couple during my time in. I may just have to settle for the booby prize... the New Zealand Defence Service Medal. Hmmm, $20 will get you one on Trademe. www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-collectables/militaria/medals/auction-447380196.htm

Does it come in a nice little presentation case with the coat of arms on it? I believe it does, complete with miniature as well. When mine arrives I'm gonna get the missus to dress up like the Governor-General and the kids can be the audience, so it will feel like a REAL medal presentation.... (things a bit quiet here in Tauranga!!)

The friend-of-a-friend is in his forties I think.

Yep, it comes in a quite attractive little case, with NZ Coat of Arms and wording "The New Zealand Defence Service Medal" all in gold. Both medal and miniature are in recessed black felt type insert, along with two cards - one from the Minister of Defence and one re caring for the medal.
A lot classier than the LSGCM medal that was formally present by CAS on a base parade way back in 1984 - proves I'm an old b..... !! All I got was the medal on the parade and a miniature afterwards.

Yep nice case etc., & you don't have to polish it. I was in when they had the raffle for the Queens Silver Jubilee gong in 1977 and that was one raffle was glad I lost. In 1981 I organised my dads war service medals for him, because he had never claimed them. He was sent them in an envelope wrapped in tissue paper but no case. Didn't get the minatures either, which would be real handy now so that my sister could have them as she lives in Australia. My brother and I have turn about each year with dads gongs. He never wore them and they weren't worn until my grandson (then aged 4) wore them on the last Dawn Parade held in Cathedral Square in Christchurch, ANZAC Day 2010.

Yes did the same for my dad - he never applied for his medals. Arrived as you comment. No minatures were ever issued for war service as a rule. Must get them mounted for him tho. He is 92 and was evacuated as a result of the feb earthquake.
