I think its great. I have lots of mates who did between 8 and 14 years who never got any recognition and they are very pleased to have something to wear on ANZAC days.

Sure, it's great that people get recognised, but where's the money being diverted from is what worries me. We might have bought another helicopter with the amount it is going to cost over the long term.

I wonder when we will get them? I'm not overly inspired by the ribbon design. I'd figured it would be the three service colours along the lines of the 39-45 star (much as the OSM is inspired by the NZ war service medal). Hopefully it's just the photography and my screen and it looks a bit nicer in person.
By coincidence I qualify for my LSGCM on Saturday. Who'd have thought it!

My reference to the waste of defence money is in striking a new medal that will cost oodles right at a time when the Defence has too little to spare. It seems a daft extravagance to me. I understand the principle of it and it's nice that we who served and got no medals might get one, but the current financial situation seems a bad time to do it.
Maybe they'll save some money and make them from melted down Skyhawks.

Regardless I'm applying for mine. Mind you I'd much prefer some compensation for the health issues I have as a result of my service. But I guess this is better than nothing

Yes, I'll probably get one too I guess, since it's there. I too have long term health issues which their promise when I signed on to look after in perpetuity turned out to be hooey. A long battle with ACC some years back thanks to a wrist injury sustained in the RNZAF nearly drove me homicidal. ACC is the scourge of the earth, the worst Government department out there - and my RNZAF contract should have instantly waivered any hassle, backed up by my service medical records... but no.

NZ needs to take a leaf out of how the Australians look after their ex serviceman. They are very well looked after here, especially compared to NZ

The Voyager survivors may have a different view. The Voyager survivors may have a different view.[/quote] Perhaps, but at least they got compensation in the end IIRC. You could throw in the re-seal deseal guys as well. I doubt the NZDF would be But I have a wife and father in law who are ex ADF I know exactly how well they’ve been looked after post their service. And in particular what they are entitled to in the future if they have health concerns. I also work with a large number fo ex ADF guys who all are pretty well looked after when required. And it’s light years ahead of the “wash their hands attitude” the NZ Government has
