I took dads to the ChCh RSA (pre earthquake) and they had a guy who mounted them for IIRC $25.00.

Does it come in a nice little presentation case with the coat of arms on it? I believe it does, complete with miniature as well. When mine arrives I'm gonna get the missus to dress up like the Governor-General and the kids can be the audience, so it will feel like a REAL medal presentation.... (things a bit quiet here in Tauranga!!) You need to get out more!

I applied on line and received the medal 4 weeks later. I live in Canada and had to pay sales tax and duty to tune of $7!! Thought about complaining to my MP but couldn't be bothered. Also I wrote earlier here about discriminatory polices practised back when Adam was a cowboy. My wife who had to leave the RNZAF on marriage after 2 years service received her medal 4 weeks after application. Had to pay tax and duty on that as well!!

Mother, daughter awarded medals MIKE CREAN Last updated 05:00 10/03/2012 Belated honours: eve Witheridge, right, and her daughter Sue, centre. Eve's sister Margery, left, has come from London to attend the awards.Relevant offersA mother and daughter will receive medals today for their military service and that of their husband and father. Eve Witheridge, who turned 90 on Thursday, was brought up in London and enlisted in the Army Territorial Service (ATS) in World War II. She worked in army administration in a Belgian house that had been requisitioned from former Nazi collaborators. After the war, she answered the call from New Zealand for people to boost the armed services and joined the Women's Royal New Zealand Air Force. She served as an officer-draughtsman, drawing plans for many buildings. She also drew the design for the air force's Queen's Colours and was on parade when the Queen presented the flag to the RNZAF in 1953. Eve met David, who was also from London, in the RNZAF. They returned to London to marry but continued their careers in New Zealand. Eve retired in the late 1950s and had a family. Her husband was a flight-sergeant clerk in the RNZAF until his death. Their daughter, Sue, joined the RNZAF after leaving school. Her 20 years of service took her to most New Zealand bases and as far abroad as the diplomatic office in Moscow. Eve and Sue will each receive the New Zealand Defence Force Service Medal, a new award for military personnel who completed at least three years of satisfactory service. They will also accept David's medal on his behalf. Sue's sister Margery flew from England for the occasion. The awards were to have been held at Sue's retirement home, but she broke an ankle on Wednesday and is in hospital. www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/6553015/Mother-daughter-awarded-medals

FAQS AND UPDATES - NZ DEFENCE SERVICE MEDAL 11 January 2012: The NZDF is currently accepting applications for the New Zealand Defence Service Medal from ex-Service persons age 50 or over. Applications from those in other age groups and from the next-of-kin of deceased ex-Service persons will be called for progressively over the next year or so. Interesting about medals for deceased servicemen and women being a year or so away as Dad's arrived yesterday at Mum's and he died 13 years ago now at the age of 67 directly due to health issues from his service. Some comments have been passed about the relevance of the medal or the value of it. All I can say is our family appreciates it for my father who was a 30 year career veteran of the Army with active service in South East Asia on more than one occasion. It is a touch stone I guess you would say. Cheers.

How long did it take from application to receipt ? I can answer my own question. Applied in the first week of March and just 5 weeks later have been advised by the courier company that they are going to deliver it to me today. Easter got in the way, they actually tried to deliver last Thursday, - bang on 4 weeks after my online application. Very quick and easy. Well done NZDF... Some people queued for a similar time just to get into an airshow....

Dave, its probably not going to hurt to shoot the application in now. I'm only 4 years older and I did mine in Jan. I guess if its too early they'll just file it for processing later, unless you've got a reputation as a stirrer on the net, and they'll probably just shred it....
