received mine yesterday at 10.30am and wore it officially for the first time today (along with the NZOS, ET, LSGC and MUC) at an opening ceremony at Hawkes Bay Prison. Got a lot of "ooohs and ahhhs" from other Corrections staff. Proud to have done my 23 years.

Junior, I note you mention the NZ Operational Service Medal, an as my understanding 14 Sqn at Tengah during Confrontation were on operational service, I applied but was turned down on the grounds I didn't have the General Service Medal! I've read the Regs for issue, and it seems to me they might be wrong in their assessment, but before I re-apply, anyone here have anything to add?

Phil, To receive the NZOSM during confrontation you had to qualify for the GSM 62 with clasp 'Malay Peninsula'. The qualifying operational period for the GSM was 30 days on land in the Malay Peninsula or Singapore between the 17 August 64 and 12 June 65. Outside that period you get zip.
The only time the NZOSM was issued for operational service as a stand alone medal was during the Malayan Emergency for personnel based in Singapore 1 February 1959 to 31 July 1960. ie 75 and 41 Sqn. and some RNZN deployments.

Just a follow up on my application. I asked using the email address on the medals site if my application had been lodged online as I hadnt got the confirmation email. I got a reply that it hadnt and to please do it again. I tried again using different web browsers over the next week or two and never got a confirmation email. Then a couple of days ago the guy followed up the original email from a month ago saying he still didnt see an application lodged for me so sent me the paper form to fill out. Did so, scanned it and emailed back, today I have my confirmation email, finally.
Long story short, if you didnt get a confirmation email you might want to double check.

And it'll arrive by courier who you'll have to give your autograph too, for the nice box with the gong inside. The good thing about this particular gong is that you don't have to polish it

Serious question, does this medal entitle the owner to sew a medal ribbon to their jacket (as seen on many old boys' jackets when they're not wearing their full size and miniature medal)? Not saying I want to, just wondering is it allowed under the etiquet.
