Serious question, does this medal entitle the owner to sew a medal ribbon to their jacket (as seen on many old boys' jackets when they're not wearing their full size and miniature medal)? Not saying I want to, just wondering is it allowed under the etiquet. Cannot think why not - others do....

Congrats Beagle.
Yes the medal ceremony is not quite what one expects. Rather than a smartly dressed Governor-General pinning it on you and saying congratulations and thanks for the service to your nation, you get woken up by a knock at the door and have a parcel shoved in your hands with the command "Sign here". Hmm. It actually took me several minutes after the courier had left to work out what the package was!

Not saying I want to, just wondering is it allowed under the etiquet. When you get the full-size medal properly mounted for wearing on the occasions that you will, there will be enough ribbon to make a proper ribbon/badge to pin to a shirt, or jacket. You must also remember the miniature must also be properly mounted for wearing [on a dinner jacket for example, but not usually on your pyamas!]. Contact Peter Stritt in the Medals section at Trentham if you can't find anyone locally, he does a superb job.

As a complete novice to the medal thing, can't it just be pinned on using the clasp that is on it? I only have one medal, does it still have to be 'mounted'?

Also, what is the actual etiquette of wearing the medal, is it only for ANZAC Day, Armistice Day and reunions? Can you wear it to other occasions like weddings, etc? I have read articles where people get arrested for wearing medals they're not entitled to, but can you get in trouble wearing a medal on occasions when the military doesn't think it is appropriate?
Is the miniature just for military mess kit and dinner jackets or do they have other uses?
Where do we learn this stuff, i thought it would come with the medal but it didn't.

From the NZDF medals site:
Wearing of Medals by Civilians
Ex-service personnel who were entitled to wear medals while in uniform may continue to do so in civilian clothing on appropriate occasions. The medals are mounted and worn in exactly the same manner as for uniformed wear. The wearing of miniature medals by both male and female ex-service personnel is designed to make wearing much more practical and comfortable while in evening dress. The wearing of miniature medals by civilians at other times (for example, during commemorative services or parades) is not officially recognised.
For a single medal Dave, you can wear it 'swing' mounted which is how it will be out of the box, if you have 2 or more they should be court mounted. Wear it on your left hand side, and miniatures should only be worn on formal evening dress. As you only have one medal the size of it shouldnt be an issue so you could wear the full size at a formal dinner/function/re-union etc.

Yes it does have to be mounted to a proper clasp to attach to your jacket that is unless you want to appear to be a scruffy idividual! The medal itself doesn't have any means of pinning it other than by the ribbon.Just using a safety pin as is will look extremely scruffy and will create the impression you don't care! If you're going to wear it then look the part! Give it to me and I'll sort it!
