Perhaps not quite “epic’ but I’d pick it would be a pleasant day at a lovely airfield – lots of awesome historic aircraft based here. Happens to be same day as Fairford though. Last time I was at Breighton it was ‘attacked’ by a 4 ship of Buccaneers – now that was ‘EPIC’ and of course they were bloody low!

Corsair on it's way via a stop at Temora, to Scone for Warbirds Over Scone this weekend. He could be in for an interesting flight as weather around the northern half of NSW at present is pretty unsettled with a number of rain showers and small storm cells in and around the Scone area. Corsair by Colin Ford, on Flickr A few aircraft of the TAM contingent currently popping in and out of view on the TAM webcams as they get themselves ready. Hope the weather at Scone over next few days is not as bad as the current BoM forecast is predicting. Would be nice for them to have a good opening event for the new Warbirds Centre there.

Well, by the looks of things the Photographer's Pit at Warbirds Down Under 2022 at Temora in October, looks to be a very popular option. Only 9 tickets were left as at 9.00AM this morning. WDU2022 Photographers Pit Advert 05042022 by Colin Ford, on Flickr Also interesting activity on the ramp at TAM this morning with a few visitors already present for the TAM Aircraft Showcase on Saturday and then the Tocumwal Airshow on the Sunday. Just hope the weather behaves for the weekend as the forecast went from being sunny and reasonable to potentially wet in the past few days. Hope both events get the blue skies they deserve.

www.airforce.gov.au/news-and-events/events/airshows/save-date-ipswich-amberley-air-tattooDefence, in partnership with the Ipswich City Council, will host the Ipswich Amberley Air Tattoo over the weekend of 29 and 30 October 2022. As part of the Air Tattoo, Australia’s largest Air Force base, RAAF Base Amberley, will open its gates to the public for the first time since 2008. RAAF Base Amberley has a long association with the City of Ipswich with the base first commencing operations on 17 June 1940 during World War II. The Air Tattoo will give people a rare insight into the base, people, aircraft and military capabilities that call Amberley home. It is also a great opportunity for Defence to thank the people of Ipswich and surrounding communities for their support of RAAF Base Amberley and the Australian Defence Force members who serve at the base. Air Force aircraft will conduct flypasts over RAAF Base Amberley during the two day event. Aircraft will also be on static display on the ground as well as a range of military equipment on display showcasing the capabilities of a number of Australian Defence Force units and squadrons located at the base. Details on how to obtain tickets for the base open days will be released later in 2022. Members of the public will also get the chance to see the Air Force flypasts free-of-charge at designated viewing hubs in Ipswich, Springfield and Rosewood. /

Could be a busy and worthwhile month for anyone who wants to visit Australia to attend airshows starting with Warbirds Down Under at Temora on 15-16 October, Ipswich Amberley Air Tattoo (RAAF Centenary Amberley Airshow Vers 2.0 - all that planning is NOT going to waste) on 29-30 October, followed by Warbirds Over Illawarra at HARS on 12-13 November, with time in between those for sightseeing enroute eg AWM, Scone Warbirds, Tocumwal, etc.

Yesterday was the May Aircraft Showcase at the Temora Aviation Museum. This was the last of three Aircraft Showcases in the first half of the year before TAM go into their winter hiatus. The first two showcases at TAM this year suffered from poor weather - rain, rain, and more rain - so the forecast for this one being mainly sunny with a very slight chance of rain, offered potential for a good day's flying activity. I was trying out a new camera body as well as a couple of new lenses, as well as trying some variations in settings, plus first opportunity to "get my eye in" for this year before a rather big second half of 2022 airshow wise. The forecast proved reliable, with a nice bright, but cold morning, with a strongish cold easterly breeze. There was a bit of cloud buildup back to the east and that would gradually move in during the day leading to variable lighting for photography purposes and a couple of brief - but very icy - rain showers just as the Canberra was displaying. But well worth the day's drive over and back for the flying program, catching up with a few other photographers and enthusiasts, plus a couple of old RAAF work colleagues I had not seen for about 30+ years (lots more grey hair, lack of hair and life experiences since way back when.) The changing light conditions provided some challenges to photography, but also provided a dark and moody backdrop for a few of my photos. As usual, Ando provided a most excellent commentary for the day, performing his duties of reminding people to vote (yesterday being Federal Election day over here), hydrate and use sun screen, as well as informative interviews with the pilots. Looking forward to the next scheduled TAM showcase in September, before Warbirds Down Under 2022 in mid-October. By the general chat of those in the crowd yesterday, a lot of anticipation for WDU2022 and what it could bring. Here is a selection of photos from the day. It was truly great to see the Canberra back in the air again. As you will note from the photos, all the 'explosive' elements on the aircraft - ejection seats - are now inert. Despite its size the Canberra is a fairly sprightly performer and iy was certainly one of the most anticipated performers on the day. Whilst waiting outside the Museum before the gates opened, and in the coffee cart queue, the Canberra did come up in discussion a number of times from those attending, so it certainly is a drawcard for the Aircraft Showcases.
Now I hope this works, short video clip taken on my mobile phone camera of the Canberra as it starts its taxi from the parking apron out to commence its display flight. It used the recently resealed - but not yet officially reopened - north south runway to taxi out to the longer runway to take off. Hopefully the runway works will be completed well before the next TAM Aircraft Showcase in September, it mainly needs the runway markings put in place and a few other finishing touches.
I still have a lot to learn on my new camera body, it has so many more features, options and settings, plus it is interesting how it 'recognises' the different lenses mounted onto it and their performance parameters compared to my previous camera bodies. Also my first full frame camera body, so getting used to that as well.

Temora Aviation Museum is getting ahead of the curve and have just announced their Aircraft Showcase schedule for 2023.
2023 Events Calendar
We are pleased to announce our 2023 Aircraft Showcase dates. The 2023 dates are focused in the Autumn and Spring months which is the most conducive flying weather with stable weather patterns for that time of the year in Temora. April Aircraft Showcase - 1st April 2023 May Aircraft Showcase - 6th May 2023 September Aircraft Showcase - 16th Sept 2023 October Showcase- 21st October 2022
A reduced program compared to previous years, but given the increasing costs to operate their aircraft and run such events, plus the unstable weather the past two years, probably a year to see how things pan out and plan for 2024. At this stage I know I will not be attending the April 2023 Aircraft Showcase as I should be "across the ditch" in either Wellington or Nelson by then getting ready for CF2023.

Brisbane Airshow which was scheduled to take place this coming weekend 2-3 July 2022, has been postponed for one week to following weekend 9-10 July 2022 due to weather forecast for heavy rain over the Brisbane area and much of the Australian east coast over the next five to six days.

Yes......not ideal for the organisers who have put in so much work to make the event a success. It has a great reputation now and hopefully the crowds will understand the need for the week's postponement. Last time there was a rain event like this promised, virtually all of the Oz east coast was flooded.....hopefully not this time but BoM still forecasting over a months rain in a few days.
