A couple more shots. Standing near the gate looking towards the cafe and you can see on the left the big windows giving an excellent view of the ramp. Cafe looking towards the serving and seating areas. A view of the lounge area from the terminal entrance. Note the very good displays and allow sometime to study / read them all when visiting. Cheers

Interesting to see, I've never been to the airport there. It's a bigger terminal than I would have thought the region warranted. Do they get a lot of passenger air traffic there? I take it that is Jim Hickey's cafe that everyone raves about? While I was there they got Dash 8 flights quite frequently I thought from Wellington and Auckland, most were almost full. There were no Beech 1900 flights during my short stay. Aero Club was quite active and all three of the helicopters pictured in one of my photos flew at one or more times while I was there. I was inside when one of them flew over and missed some good shots of that one. Yes Jim Hickey's cafe and a great lunch too! He has memoribilia all over the place and I took quite some time to read the excellent exhibits. I did not photograph them closely as I assume they would be copyright. Jim senior was a second world war pilot and he has a great memorial to him there. It is all very well displayed Dave and well worth a look if your in the area at some time. Many of the historic events are featured around the cafe and it calls itself an aviation art and cafe for spotters. Cheers

Yesterday I had a grabaseat flight to New Plymouth and my first ride on a Dash 8. I arrived just after midday and returned to Auckland on the 7:35 pm flight hoping to get some nice sunset photos. However the weather we can not book in advance and rain started late afternoon and continued till I left so I packed the camera away. The walk to the aircraft was a windy wet one and the camera stayed in the bag for the rest of the journey. Too dark and too wet for photos even out the window. Some photos from the day: ZK-NEZ The gear coming down. Touchdown. Cabin view. A sunny arrival shot. Terminal from the road. Excellent Cafe. Departure lounge. Couple of residents? Random shots. I did enjoy the break away from Auckland and look forward to future bargains on grabaseat. Cheers

A decisive win for Barrack and change from the people of America. Well done and I have just been watching his speech on Prime, an inspiration to all. The road will be hard but this man will be a good leader and inspiring not only to America but all the world.

What seat number were you sitting in on the Dash 8? I think you'll find it was an ATR 72 :-) The big giveaway is that the mains on the 72 are under the fuselage, while the 8 has the mains under the engines. Seat 06A. doh! I should have picked that up! Thanks.

Colin, how are they different to the Self check in kiosks they have had for a long time? WHen you board now I notice you have to scan your own boarding pass. Is that a staff reduction scheme? Easy, but it's also nice to have someone greet you and welcome you. Yes they are similar to the self check in kiosks except you also do your bags as well if you have any. I guess if you had two bags you would have to pay the extra charge in some way? I notice two or three help desks with staff available at AKL. Still need smiling staff at the gates I would think as a security measure / helper? Cheers

I thought I would start a thread on Air New Zealand new self check in areas for comments and experiences. I tried it yesterday on my grabaseat afternoon flight to New Plymouth. As with most grabaseat flights I had booked a couple of months ago and on the week end I went to the Air NZ web site and selected my seats which was real easy then they send out a pdf of my boarding pass to print. At that time my printer decides there is not enough ink so I decide that I will get them reprinted at the new check in terminal. That was just so easy to use by following the on screen menus and no queue to wait in, I think they may have a winner and well done to Air NZ. Some minor glitches as my barcode would not read but they have a back up in that key information is typed in and a pass is issued. Anything new will take a little while to settle in and having a good plan B will ensure no hold ups. Photos were taken late evening around 8:30 pm so most of the passengers were gone. How did others find the new system? Colin

Still better than an aisle seat in a 737 Colin Definitely! I found interesting the Dash 8 the seat cushion is your life preserver. Of course only in the unlikely event of actually having to use it.

Nice shots of action at Queenstown James. I like that airport for spotting and don't get there often enough. What seat number were you sitting in on the Dash 8? I had my first ride on a Dash 8 yesterday and was in seat 11A outbound and 8A inbound. 11 was a bit too far back to get some good shots of the gear retracting and coming down. 8 was okay if there was no rain. A comment was added to my photo on Airliners.net that two days after the pic the aircraft was retired and withdrawn from service. N196UA. www.airliners.net/photo/United-Airlines/Boeing-747-422/1417691/L/Four years ago now we went to Christchurch from Auckland and it was a ANZ 767-219 ZK-NBC as one of the 737 was in for maintenance. The trip back was a 737 though. www.airliners.net/photo/Air-New-Zealand/Boeing-767-219-ER/0569915/L/I have noted the A320 on domestic duties from time to time while spotting from the covered car park at AKL. When I have visited Christchurch spotting I have got almost every one during the day or seems like it and most go to International. Cheers

JTR is a Jet Connect machine isn't it? Is it the mysterious silver bullet referred to as being at CHC lately naked? Yes. Jetconnect is that a Qantas company or contractor?

It's just that Corsair picture, the larger picture was posted to give us a better view. Shouldn't be a big deal, at least not in IE Explorer. Pain in the butt for us Safari, Firefox users even though I have upgraded the monitor to 20" cinema wide screen. (16:9 format) Maybe I just need to find the preferences and change em but don't know where to look? Don't have any Microsoft programs on this machine. I will wait a couple of days till it drops off the 75 list.
