Thanks for that - couldn't see myself in the crowd shots, but I was there, as a kid with my Dad ... the tangled 'chute brought back memories I'd forgotten I had. The Phantoms and Mirages made a great impression, so good to see which other aircraft were there - more than I realised. I also seem to remember a Grumman Avenger??

More beautiful photos ... I could sit here and look at them all day (and all night!). Thank you very much Gavin, really appreciate the updates, and all your great work.

Wow, that is very impressive - especially the single view, full screen, complete with spaghetti break ...

Sorry, missed earlier posts - a real shame she is going, was hoping to see her up with one (or two) of the recent Spitfire arrivals, .... ... ungainly?

Hi Dave,
I attended the Gisborne Bicentennial Airshow in 1969, when I was in the 7th form, and a schoolmate who was going for his private licence flew us down for the day from Whakatane.
No programmed train activity that I can remember, but definitely Harvard and Vampire displays, a Canberra, and a Beaver display that sticks in my memory (red, I'm sure, so don't know whose?).
Cheers, Chris

The wheels flip over the front of the floats for hard landings. I guess there must be a matching pair down the rear end of the floats somewhere.
5 years ago we flew direct from the island to Nadi Airport on one of these Beavers (they have at least two). What a way to travel - step off the beach onto a float at one end, down the steps into the terminal building at the other, still with sand between your toes ....
Sure, Fiji looks anything but Paradise for most of the locals, but you try and tell them that!

As Dave said, they always take me back to that Canadian "Danger Bay" programme that was on TV when I was a kid. One also made a big impression on me at the Gisborne Centennial airshow (1969), with a near-vertical landing into a stiff breeze. That one didn't have floats on I should add!
Interestingly, the Beaver vs jetskis photo was part of an approx 2km unsuccessful take-off attempt across the lagoon, which the pilot later told me was due partly to lack of wind, partly to lack of chop, and partly to the extra two small kids on board! He thought the engine might be due for some attention ...

That 1st Spitfire photo is THE most beautiful Spitfire shot I think I have ever seen. Mr Makanna would be proud of that one I'm sure. And you managed to fit Eggie in as well ... just perfect.

My Dad told a story of how as a teenager, he and one of his brothers rowed a dinghy from Greenhithe out to the (1943) crash site in the mangroves near Herald Island (Japanese diplomatic personnel and families in transit to imprisonment in the States?). They were suitably impressed by the gorey scene, managed to souvenir some items from the wreckage, and rowed home extra quickly in case they were spotted. The best bit of the oft-told tale was the image of two kids wedged in their kitchen doorway as they tried to get away from one of the liferafts they accidentally inflated in the back yard!
