The best thing is to buy the aircraft designed for it the CL415 MRT. As with Spain , Turkey and Portugal and France these are imbedded in the Military and are used for other missions when not fighting fires as the tanks are designed to be removed during this time. They consider it good training also as it gives real world experience for there pilots. Some use a ballot system so Transport, Fighter and chopper pilots can have a go.
Also makes sense for NZ as we are surrounded by water and these can operate from Land & Sea and would also be good for Pacific Island emergencies as be able to land regardless of Land Runways. They are reasonbly priced as well at around $50milish

We do it also at SD $120 hour on Zenair 601XL no charge for intructors. They do it for the love of Aviation.

A big stumbling Block to young Aviators is the cost of a flying Machine.... Engine wise the Rotax has become the Pratt & Whitney of the recreational scene with multiple new types coming out all the time of other engines. Jabiru is another great engine (IF YOU INSTALL AND MAINTAIN THEM PROPERLY- MOST WEREN'T OR AREN'T) we have 2 here just passed 700 hours no issues. Just been looking at planes for sale and some good buys out there at present. So you don't have to have that $200.000 dollar beast as there some really good buys at the Mo under $50K and way less than that. If you are after a single place machine there is a really nice Taylor Mono (Microlite) for sale in Hawera. VW powered starts every time it's immaculate and all for $12K and there are good buys round the country like this. Pic here 1.bp.blogspot.com/_y93A2MLIpKw/TAog4kKSojI/AAAAAAAAAuE/ivGAfli3I_U/s1600/scan0001-7.jpgSo go buy yaself a flying machine then I just got one for $10K a 2 seater very nice.....

Remeber People you will nedd to Check out , Biff , Dispose of all old charts as the new ones have HUGE AIRSPACE Changes coming into force on the 10th November 2016...Mainly the inclusion of CFZ's (Common FGrequenzy Zones) being introduced all over the Country (Raglan for example has a new Frequency) you will need to get ya Knob twiddling up to scratch..... If you use the old MAP's after the 10th November you will be comprimising FLIGHT SAFETY as the changes are extensive. Get in before the rush at. www.groupead.co.nz/collections/chart

It might be just me but lately have noted the general trend in GA aircraft handling and general operating of said aircraft as being a bit slack.
I suspect thisd comes down to Currency I mean 12 hours a year does in no way make one Current in any aircraft no matter how good you think you are.
I had an A-cat tell me a couple months back the degrading of flight currency as cost is really biting into GA as never before. He reckons you need at least a minimum of 25 Hours to be acceptable and plus 50 a year to be current. His determination was that GA is in trouble if Pilots can't maintain or are able to achieve these levels of hours per year.
Recreataional Aircraft on the other hand seem to be able to exceed 50 hours per year and most recreational Pilots I know are well exceeding this with some real keen ones doing well in excess of 100 to 150 plus hours a year. This comes down to them being cheaper to operate and maintain witrh more Modern fuel efficent engines with better comfort ,Range,speed.......
Yes the age old questrion is recreational aircraft can only carry pilot and passenger. I have just watched the Blacksands 2016 and most aircraft were either just pilot themselves and in the case of 4 place aircraft only pilot & Pax could be seen so not really an aggument there.
Looking at that video some of the landings were pretty average ( Raglan is a easy place to land but will bite if not on top of your game) I suspect this comes back to the Currency thing.
Anyhoo just an observation.
