A year ago, New Zealand TV journalist Rob Vaughan had just taken an ambulance ride away from the scene of a forced landing that he nearly pulled off. The Aeroprakt A-22LS ZK-LFD he was flying nosed over at low speed in a soft field having shed its windscreen 1600 feet above, the cause of his hasty return to mother earth. This won't make the news much in NZ as it debunks the 'a drone hit me' b.s. story he gave the NZ media. A bit more info in the below link...
Now I've been a model builder/designer/modeller for 35 years while also flying full-size microlights and GA craft. I've been shooting commercial aerial photography since the V8 track was built in Hamilton 11 years ago (diy electric r/c cameraship) but most of the past 5 years I've hung out of a PA28 sans door I've watched the growing animosity at 'drone pilots' get worse and worse. It's made many long-time radio-controlled modellers life just that much more difficult. I have seen more than a few "interesting" reports from noted media and aviation sources and it's about time some full-size pilots realise that the majority of modellers love their model hobby - just like they love theirs. Google "Rod Vaughan drone" and we get 722,000 hits on the web.
Thanks Rod - apology accepted (lol) Pete

Going by the Bi-Centennial Air Show at Richmond in 1988 you will get a run by at 800-1000feet (revised), probably to the south, turning around well south and then a northbound run and slow climb out to NW. Remember it will still have a lot of fuel on board so there wont be any thing spectacular. I saw it 'perform' at Richmond in 1988 - about as exciting as watching paint dry! Errol I was there too... my first major overseas airshow as a 20yo. I agree... it came, we saw... bring on the Skyhawks lol

There have been a few near-misses in the Hamilton area. Our pilot logged one with CAA in March near Temple View after we were cleared in not knowing there was an orbiting craft coming straight for us. My Mrs in the front-right let out an 'exclamation statement' before the pilot had seen it. Way too close. I was looking out the other side so missed it but it apparently was way way too close... closer than this story.

Very sad. Every year they have a training weekend/brush-up for pilots before EAA Oshkosh (starting Monday). They practice formation work and can earn their 'formation wings' in time for Airventure Oshkosh. I'm 30 minutes from Sheboygan and I had hoped to go their today but we ended up at Stevens Point...

As a microlight pilot, aerial photographer... 30 year rc modeller and (although I hate the damn word..) 'drone pilot'... the whole artical wreaks of total fictitious hearsay bollocks. 1700' is possible but so so so unlikely. Rates right up there with 'I was driving through the roadworks and a Chinese satellite broke my window'. Come on - no proof. Show me the bits! Total ex-journo crap and the papers love it. I'm sure the CAA report will eventually tell us something a long time after this sensationalistic crap has passed. I do wish him a speedy recovery- accidents are crap. But I'm afraid there's zero credibility here. It's crap like this that makes it easier to do all my commercial photography from a 135 charter! Less paperwork. Easier insurance! Ahhh that feels better Pete

To your comment efliernz, When I was growing up I remember our next door neighbor Mr Stan Jones only once recounting his experiences in the Merchant Navy on the North Sea and Mediterranean runs. Sunk 4 times by U-boats and his one "thing" was his remembrance of the burning ocean and swimming through thick oil. Terrified me at the time and I did not know then what I obviously know now. Much was seen by many - stuff that that's horrible. My Mum (still rocking at 89 btw) recalled in the weekend a moment (around 1946) when her big brother had been to the movies - a war movie. Douglas had been an aircraftmen on Lancasters during the war... well Douglas was asked by his Mum "how was the movie dear?". He replied "I didn't enjoy it... there was this plane and it was on fire" and then he collapsed and went unconscious for 2 minutes on the floor of the kitchen. PTSD has been there to some extent for many for a really long time. I received a real education on this after helping out the Tokanui Memorial 2 years ago (aerial photography donation).

Exactly the sort of stuff I wanted to hear - many thanks. I'll do some planning but I'm aware that we are likely to 'do the UK' in a year of two and it may be easier to hold-off this time. It is a lot of hassle for a weekend! I am spoilt in Wisconsin... my twin (who happens to be turning 50 too) is 20 miles from OSH in Fond-du-Lac. Rather convenient lol.
I do know there is so much to see around that area in the UK that making it a quick stop-off isn't an ideal use of time and resources.
Many thanks again... Pete (brain going around and around....)

Well I'm thinking of dropping in next year as part of my 50th birthday wander.
Question time to those that have already been. I'm in Wisconsin the previous week and traveling to the Netherlands around the date of the airshow. How hard is it to arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick early am... and public-travel / train to Cambridge or Royston Stations (to get the shuttle bus) to get to the show? I'm traveling solo.
It looks like public travel is a nightmare if I stayed for the twilight show so I'm unsure whether I try to find local accomodation (probably booked out already) or take the public bus/train to Stanstead on the show evening for a night-flight to Amsterdam.
Opinions here guys please. Obviously a year away but we all know how fast cheap fares and accomodation disappears!
Btw - yes I will return to Wisconsin for that 'other show' at the end of July...
Pete
