Mines G92696....didnt work. It turned out to be a 6 (F), which may explain why a certain word starting with that letter was uttered in my presence :-)
Interestingly enough though...every official number allotted to me during that time ended with the number 6 - Drivers license, passport, tax code, Service number, bank account, even my library card! I was very suspicious about being on a watch list somewhere...

Cheers, Les. Nah will have to put that coffee off again. The young fella will discuss options whilst kitting up, and if he cant film then so be it.
Regardless, will be an incredible experience for him!

Hey thanks guys for that info, a few commonsense items we hadn't considered. I think the ideal situation will be a helmet mounted cam, so not relying on grip strength etc to keep control of the unit. I'll leave it in his capable hands to listen to the pilot and do as he's told!
Think I'm more excited about it than the young fella is....

Hi team, I'm seeking some advice from users of GoPro type cameras for in-cockpit filming. My boy is going for a flight in a PC-9 next week, is was a prize for getting Dux on his cadet W/O course over here at RAAF Pearce. He'd like to record it, and will obviously check with pilot etc when he's there pre-flight. My question is: what methods of mounting have you found successful? He's got most of the mounts, I'm hoping they'll have a helmet mount, but if not probably hand held on a stalk with a lanyard. I've googled it a bit, seems to be a fair bit of use for suction mount, but I'd be sceptical of it sticking on and probably a FOD hazard inside the cockpit.... I'm hoping he'll get good coverage of it, I'll be at work so can't be there to see him on the flight line. Cheers!

Mindblowing technology....who wouldve thought a few years ago the impact 3D printing would have, and its potential now is incredible.

Are the roads built to take 600 tonne? Or was it leaving a trail of potholes and broken top seal? I think from memory the trailer was almost twice the length of the one with the loco on it, so around 25 axles, each with at least 4 wheels per axle. So the load is spread out quite a bit. I didnt realise the genny was heading south, that would be an interesting load to follow! I'd love to head up to the airport tomorrow to watch the takeoff, but I fear it will be almost just as busy - I pity my fellow FIFO workers flying out then, thats around the time that a lot of guys will be heading to the airport to go to work. Also got sent this one today, may be slightly photoshopped I believe! www.facebook.com/perthweatherlive/photos/a.561730183868198.1073741923.269003509807535/1096960737011804/?type=3&theater

Yeah will probably be similar to that. Seen a few decent sized truckloads on the road up at work - watched a 600 tonne digger being transported by road, had 4 trucks pulling and 2 trucks pushing the trailer. Could only go about 10kph, so took the best part of a day to travel the 100km from one mine to another!
I guess the speed of getting the generator over from Europe offset the cost involved! Mustve been a pricey job thats for sure...

Planespotters and aviation enthusiasts going gangbusters today in Western Australia it seems... www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/antonov-an225-mriya-worlds-biggest-planes-perth-landing-delayed-20160515-goven7.htmlI was going to head down for a look, then heard how many people were expected, so will watch it on the news instead! Thats one massive mother of a plane, carrying a 130-odd tonne generator destined for the Pilbara. I didnt think much of it when I first heard about it, but then found out how little its seen in the air, and even more rare a sight in Australia. So its kinda a big deal I suppose then.

Hi Ox, is that with Cobham? We used to fly with them to BHP sites till about 12 months ago. A few colleagues from work are now on the island, but not sure how long for, the rosters are pretty harsh. Nice to see the camp from above, looks pretty big!

Wow, 19 years! Theres a bit of history for me, I remember (hopefully correctly) in late '87 going out to the back of our farm in Waikanae with a bunch from Shelly Bay to retrieve bits from ZK-AKX which crashed there in '49. Apparently a few of those bits were used for the resto of NZ2013, I do remember the Huey taking out a few sling loads of stuff, including the tailplane.
History for me, as Dad was involved with the locating of the plane and recovery of bodies. We kept a fair bit of memorabilia from that (newspaper clippings etc) and even had the door hanging up in our woolshed for many years until it disappeared....
Great to see the end result is still looking fantastic! Well done those craftsmen!

Hi guys, my mission may have beaten me...I'm trying to source (if possible) the 3-letter designation of a particular aircraft flown in WW2.
Here's what I've got: Dad flew Mosquito's on 608 & 162 Sqn (PFF) in '44 &'45. Now from his logbook I can see the one he flew the most was a Mark XXV, and has number of KB499. I'd love to see if theres any way of getting the lettering that it had, or else at last resort I'd just use his initials.
I've been googling like mad, but havent found anything yet...Any assistance gratefully accepted!
BTW, how did they come up with the lettering for those planes?

With respect, that's bovine manure sir. You cannot have a two tier system of law enforcement based apon racial profiling, if you allow the numpties leeway on this, what's next? More stringent eye exams for Asians who are involved in accidents? Or perhaps mandatory diabetes tests for Pacific Islanders before they can get a license? It's a slippery slope and it plays exactly to the narrative of the redneck/vocal minority.....which is why it is a stupid, ill conceived and ultimately racially divisive piece of public policy based on wooly thinking and daft logic. It says in essence Maori get a free pass because they are different, different how? Yep, my bad....I do agree with your post, but I just hoped we wouldnt be dragged into the mire that is debate over race-based legislation, which is never-ending. I'm totally against these sorts of policies, and as a middle-aged, heterosexual, able bodied, tax-paying whitey Im probably the most disadvantaged of the lot!

Not much incentive for young fellas to get schooled up in the finer arts of aircraft maintenance and expect to stay in NZ. My boy has the option of studying in NZ (via RNZAF) or Uni in Perth. He chose WA as he believes much better employment options once he's qualified. What an absolute shame the NZ job market has become... Is your son an Australian citizen? If he's not he might find the job opportunities situation in the West Island no better than over here. Sorry about the thread drift Mods. Nah, we're kiwis living in Perth, and no hope for myself becoming a citizen. He's wanting to do an engineering degree specialising in mechatronics which will give him good opportunities in the future. Best case is he shacks up with an Aussie lass and that way gets the tick. Question though....did any of these guys about to be laid off see this coming and pass by the opportunity to retrain/upskill? I know in my line of work we have to have a plan B, thats the way it is now and youre pretty naive thinking the jobs gonna last. The thought of getting laid off absolutely terrifies me so I really do sympathise with these guys. Guess if youre in a niche market with specialised skills is there much chance to change careers?

Careful now boyos..we're sliding down that slippery slope of redneck talkback radio..."I'm not racist but..."
As absurd as it sounds I suspect that the NZ media has not fully researched the story and is as usual relying on shock journalism to sell papers...
